Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad submitted the resignation of his government today, Thursday, and was assigned to discharge the tasks of the government until a new government is formed following the announcement of the results of the parliamentary elections.
A presidential statement clarified that the resignation comes in line with what is stipulated in the country’s constitution, where President Abdelmadjid Tebboune assigned the resigned Prime Minister to discharge the functions of the government until a new government is formed.
This comes a day after the President of the Constitutional Council, Kamal Fneish, announced the final results of the early parliamentary elections, which were held on June 12.
According
The formation of the government depends on the nature of the majority controlling parliament, but the election results did not result in any of the parties obtaining a parliamentary majority.
The elections were led by the former ruling National Liberation Front party with 98 seats out of 407, followed by the Independents bloc with 84 seats, and then the Society for Peace Movement with 64 seats.
With these results, a coalition of at least 3 parliamentary blocs is required to form a majority in Parliament, to reach 204 seats out of a total of 407.
With the exception of the Movement of Society for Peace, the winning parties and the independent blocs announced their support for the formation of a presidential majority government, to favor the option of naming a prime minister loyal to the policies of the Algerian president.
The new government will have to deal with a financial and economic crisis caused by the decline in oil prices.
