“For the vast majority of UK citizens and businesses, and certainly for the vast majority of critical national infrastructure and government service providers, the primary major threat is not from government agencies but from cyber criminals,” Cameron added.
A ransomware is a malicious program that restricts access to the computer system it infects, and the program demands that a ransom be paid to its creator in order to gain access to the files. Some of its types encrypt files on the target system’s hard drive, and display messages asking the user to pay.
Ransomware attacks have increased globally in the past two years, targeting major companies and infrastructure facilities in the United States of America, most notably Colonial Pipeline – the largest operator of fuel pipelines in America.
Colonial Pipeline was forced to shut down its entire pipeline network, which is the source of nearly half of fuel supplies on the East Coast of the United States, after the cyber attack, which it said was caused by a ransom program, which sent gasoline prices up in America.
