Tunisia, the Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman imposed restrictions to limit the spread of the Corona virus, while the number of deaths in Brazil as a result of the epidemic exceeded 500,000 cases.
In Tunisia, and in light of a significant increase in the number of injuries and deaths in the state of Kairouan (central), the government announced on Saturday that its President Hisham Al-Mashishi decided, starting today, Sunday, to impose a comprehensive quarantine, and to close the states (provinces) that are witnessing a significant increase in Corona injuries. Governmental measures include establishing isolation centers for positive cases, and field hospitals to take care of early detected cases, ensuring access to oxygen, as well as raising the frequency of vaccination with anti-Coronavirus vaccines.
In the same context, Tunisian President Kais Saied on Saturday ordered the establishment of a military field hospital in Kairouan, which witnessed sporadic protests over the deteriorating health situation there.
While health officials warned of the seriousness of the epidemiological situation, Tunisia recorded on Saturday 86 new deaths, and about 2,200 new infections with the virus.
Sultanate of Oman and UAE
In the Sultanate of Oman, the Supreme Committee to Combat the Corona Virus decided to prevent the movement of individuals and vehicles and to close all public places and commercial activities from eight in the evening until four in the morning, starting from this evening, Sunday, until further notice.
The committee indicated that this measure comes in light of the significant increase in the number of injuries and patients in wards and intensive care rooms, in addition to the number of deaths.
In the Emirates, the official news agency quoted a statement by the General Civil Aviation Authority on Saturday, that the authorities decided to suspend the entry of travelers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Namibia on all national and foreign flights, as of Monday evening.
The authority said – in a statement – that the restrictions will also include transit passengers coming from these countries, “with the exception of transit flights coming to the country and heading to these countries.”
She added that air cargo flights between those countries and the Emirates will continue as usual, noting that these restrictions were imposed to limit the spread of the Corona virus.
The decision excludes UAE nationals and their first-degree relatives, accredited diplomatic missions, official delegations, business planes (after obtaining prior approvals), and holders of golden and silver residence permits, in addition to holders of vital jobs, according to the same statement.
Brazil: deaths and protests
In other regions of the world, Saturday, the number of deaths in Brazil exceeded 500 thousand deaths, and this comes while the country – with a population of 213 million – records an average of 100 thousand infections per day, and two thousand deaths due to the Corona virus.
The new death toll was announced, while the latest weekly report of the “Fucruz” Foundation – the reference in the field of medical research – stated that Brazil is experiencing a critical epidemiological situation, warning that the situation may deteriorate in the coming weeks with the onset of winter in the southern hemisphere.
And Saturday, thousands of Brazilians demonstrated in dozens of cities in 20 states to denounce President Jair Bolsonaro’s policy in dealing with the Corona crisis, in the second largest country affected by the epidemic after the United States.
The protesters raised banners calling for the departure of Bolsonaro, who they accuse of failing to bring in vaccines and underestimating the crisis, and the protesters considered that the death of half a million people as a result of the virus is a form of genocide carried out by the government against the Brazilian people. https://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.467.0_en.html#goog_1904826090
Turkey: 5 million doses of vaccine
In Turkey, the official Anatolia news agency reported on Saturday that the authorities had received an additional 5 million doses of the anti-Coronavirus vaccine produced by Sinovac.
This development comes while the pace of the vaccination program in Turkey accelerated last week, with more than one million people being vaccinated daily since Monday, raising the number of doses that have been injected so far to more than 40 million doses.
This coincides with a decrease in the number of infections and deaths due to the virus among Turkish citizens.
It also comes at a time when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hope for a recovery in the tourism sector, with Russia ready to impose restrictions that it had previously imposed on its citizens’ travel to Turkey due to the outbreak of the Corona epidemic.
On Saturday, the Turkish Ministry of Health counted 51 deaths and about 5,500 new infections with the Corona virus.
