An Afghan government official told Al-Jazeera that it was decided to dismiss the Afghan Defense Minister, Asadullah Khaled, against the backdrop of the deteriorating security situation in the country and the Taliban’s control of a number of areas.
The government official explained that General Bismillah Mohammadi was appointed as Minister of Defense, replacing Khaled.
And Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had decided – earlier – that the army chief, General Yassin Zia, would take over the duties of the Minister of Defense due to the health condition of the Minister, General Asadullah Khaled.
Last March, he dismissed the Interior Minister, Massoud Andrabi, over the failure to control the security situation in the country.
The escalation of battles comes with the start of the withdrawal of US and other foreign forces from Afghanistan since the beginning of last May.
