Program launched Today, the United Nations World Food Tuesday, an urgent appeal to save 41 million people, who are on the brink of starvation, explaining that saving them requires funding of up to $6 billion.
Said WFP Executive Director, David Beasley, in statement, ” We have four countries where there are conditions similar famine, a stage fifth classified as (disaster), Ethiopia, Madagascar and South Sudan and Yemen,” where suffering in these countries 584 thousand people, while longer Nigeria and Burkina Faso are of “particular concern”.
” ” Beasley added I want to emphasize how bad the situation is today, there are also 41 million people in 43 countries who are knocking on the door of famine (Phase 4/Emergency) , , noting that “the slightest shock will push them into the abyss.”
WFP’s efforts focus on emergency aid, relief and rehabilitation, development aid and special operations, and two-thirds of its work takes place in conflict-affected countries, where people are three times more likely to be undernourished than those living in conflict-free countries.
A week ago, the United Nations held a closed session on the Tigray region in Ethiopia, where Beasley and several officials spoke about the 350,000 people suffering from hunger there, and also warned that two million people in the regions of Tigray, Afar and Amhara will soon fall into the clutches of hunger.
Last month, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that “5.1 million people are fighting starvation” in the Lake Chad Basin, the “worst increase in 4 years”.
