The representative of the Sulaymaniyah governorate in the Kurdistan region of Iraq in the Iraqi parliament, Hoshyar Abdullah, revealed a political agreement between the Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Massoud Barzani, and the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr, on the form of the system of government in the next stage.
Abdullah said, on his Twitter account, that during 14 visits made by members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party to the Sadrist movement, they offered an agreement that includes “the Democrat’s dealing with Sadr as the only political reference for the Shiite decision, in exchange for the Sadrists to deal with Barzani as the only political reference for the Kurdish decision.” “. Abdullah added that the offer is still valid and the meetings are continuing, wondering about the nature of the regime in Iraq during the coming era.
The Kurdish representative’s speech comes after a visit by members of the Sadrist movement to Erbil (the center of the Kurdistan region) and their meeting with the head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Massoud Barzani.
Last April, Al Jazeera Net published a report on a remarkable political rapprochement witnessed by the Iraqi political scene between Al-Sadr and Barzani, with the aim of achieving political gains in the post-parliamentary elections scheduled for next October.
He pointed out that the two sides were heading to agree that Barzani would limit his political reference to Sadr, excluding other Shiite political forces, in exchange for Sadr’s support for the Kurdistan Democratic Party to obtain the position of President of the Republic.
This rapprochement coincided with al-Sadr’s assertion more than once that his current sought to obtain the position of prime minister in the upcoming elections.
The Democratic Party had sought in the past years to obtain the presidency of the republic, but it failed and all times during the past 16 years turned to its political rival, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the last of which was in 2018, when the Shiite parties turned the equation in favor of the candidate of the Patriotic Union, the current President of the Republic, Barham Salih Ali.
