Politico revealed that the United States is monitoring two Iranian navy ships, whose final destination may be Venezuela, and that Venezuela has been warned not to receive them.
The site quoted US officials as saying that an Iranian frigate and an oil tanker had been converted into a floating forward staging base, heading south along the eastern coast of Africa, but Washington was not certain of the ships ’destination.
According to the site, Iran’s intention to send ships to the western hemisphere and their cargo remains a mystery.
Politico said some US lawmakers have been informed that Washington believes the ships may head towards Venezuela, but that the destination may change.
In mid-August, the US Justice Department confirmed that it had seized oil shipments on board 4 ships sent by Iran to Venezuela, which is experiencing a stifling economic crisis, announcing that the shipments were linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
