The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Duarte Pacheco said that his visit to Doha came to participate in the opening of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in the Qatari capital, which will help combat extremism.
In his speech to an episode (18/06/2021) of the “Today’s Meeting” programme, he added that the office shows the importance of combating terrorism, and also helps parliaments that pass laws related to combating terrorism in all countries, which is important for Qatar as its capital is an important center in the fight against terrorism around the world. the world.
He added that the Inter-Parliamentary Union was established in order to demonstrate the important role of the legislative authority in all countries, and to work to improve the rights of citizens in 179 countries around the world, including the rights of women and children.
He added that he will visit the occupied territories next July, and will tour Jerusalem and Gaza to see the extent of the destruction caused by the Israeli bombing during the last war, and to hear the testimonies of people and women, especially about the violations they have been subjected to, and that the Union has a human rights committee that will work To search the files of parliamentarians prisoners of the occupation.
He added that the International Federation will not only follow up on the cases of parliamentarians in the occupation prisons, but will continue to detain parliamentarians in Venezuela, Egypt and Turkey, and we will urge countries everywhere around the world to limit the violation of human rights in all their spectrum because we defend everyone, not just parliamentarians.
