The Moroccan News Agency said that King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory cable to Naftali Bennett on his election as prime minister of Israel, while the Justice and Development Party announced the visit of a Hamas delegation to Rabat.
In the telegram, the Moroccan King said that he takes this occasion to affirm the keenness of the Kingdom of Morocco to continue what he called its active role and its benevolent endeavors aimed at finding a just and lasting peace in the Middle East that guarantees all the peoples of the region to live side by side in security, stability and harmony.
Bennett added that “Israel sees Morocco as a friendly country and an important partner in peace and security efforts in the region.”
Morocco was the fourth Arab country to resume relations with Israel late last year under an agreement sponsored by the administration of former US President Donald Trump.
On the other hand, the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, arrived in Morocco on a visit to the country at the head of a leading delegation from the movement.
An official statement by the movement stated that the visit comes within the framework of a series of foreign visits to the countries of the region with the aim of mobilizing the Arab and Islamic position in order to serve the Palestinian cause and protect Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque from the continuous Israeli threats.
For his part, Ismail Haniyeh said that the Moroccan Justice and Development Party’s invitation to visit Rabat, under the auspices and embrace of the Moroccan King and his people, comes after the victory achieved by the Palestinian resistance in a round he described as articulating in the conflict with the occupation.
Haniyeh stressed that the Palestinian resistance has many tasks ahead of the post-victory period, as he put it.
In turn, Moroccan Prime Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani said that the visit of the Hamas delegation led by Haniyeh to the country comes in the context of the Kingdom’s firm position in support of the Palestinian people and their struggle.
El Othmani, who also heads the Justice and Development Party, added that Morocco rejects the deal of the century and the Judaization of Jerusalem.
Earlier, the Justice and Development Party (leader of the government coalition) in said a statement that discussions will be held between the Hamas delegation and the party leadership on the developments of the Palestinian cause and ways to support it, and the visit will include meetings with other unnamed Moroccan political parties.
On Tuesday evening, a source from the Justice and Development Party told Anadolu Agency that Haniyeh would arrive in Rabat on Wednesday for a days-long visit – the first of its kind to the country – in response to an official invitation from the party.
Since the signing of the agreement to normalize relations with Israel, the Moroccan king – who heads the Al-Quds Committee – has confirmed the kingdom’s “steadfast position on the Palestinian issue, based on the two-state solution,” stressing that negotiations are the only way to reach a settlement.
