The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) launched an appeal for humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip, worth $164 million, following what it described as the hostilities that the Strip experienced last May.
The Acting Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza, Sam Rose, said that the agency will begin early next month to pay financial compensation to the families of the displaced who lost their homes during the recent war. He stressed that the living conditions in the Gaza Strip witnessed a clear deterioration as a result of the continuation of the Israeli siege imposed for the 15th year in a row, and the recent military confrontation that erupted last month.
And he indicated that the agency will start implementing several programs in the Gaza Strip, within the state of emergency.
He said that the first of these programs is to cover food and necessary supplies, and to rebuild and repair damaged homes, as well as to support families who are still in shelters.
He pointed to the launch of a psychological support program, through the establishment of summer camps, which will benefit about 150,000 students in Gaza next July, as well as families in shelters.
He pointed out that about 50 families are still residing in shelters (UNRWA schools) in Gaza City.
According to UNRWA, the number of houses that were completely or very severely damaged as a result of the recent aggression reached about 1,400, while the number of partially damaged housing units was estimated at about 14,000.
As part of the emergency program, UNRWA intends to distribute about two thousand dollars, next July, to each family who lost their home completely or was seriously damaged.
Since last April 13, the situation in the Palestinian territories has exploded as a result of brutal attacks by the Israeli occupation police and settlers in Al-Aqsa Mosque and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem, in an attempt to vacate 12 Palestinian homes and hand them over to settlers.
Tension shifted to the Gaza Strip, where the occupation forces launched a massive aggression, starting on May 10, that lasted 11 days, killing and wounding hundreds.
